• Cricket is the second most popular sport in the world
  Cricket has evolved continuously since its inception in the 16th century. It is now enjoyed in over 180 countries around the world, with approximately 2.5 billion fans watching or playing the sport. How crazy are these numbers! ,
  It is most popular in India and Pakistan, although England and Australia are the two most popular teams.
• Three forms of the game are played competitively
  There are three main forms of cricket played at the competitive level around the world. These are Test match cricket, ODI cricket and T20.
  A Test match is a traditional format lasting 5 days. People consider Test match cricket as the purest form of cricket. However, T20 is the fastest growing format with games lasting only a few hours instead of 5 days.
• Test cricket was first played in 1877. The first Cricket World Cup was held in 1975.
  The biggest event on any cricket fan’s calendar is the Cricket World Cup organized by the International Cricket Council.

The event was established by the UK, South Africa and Australia and was first held in 1975. It is held every four years and in the latest event, 2019, England won the cup.

• The cricket wicket originally had only two sticks
  Although it is unimaginable to log less than three for a wicket, it used to happen. Two stumps were common until 1775, when the English cricketer Edward “Lumpy” Stevens kicked the ball three times between the two stumps without moving the bails, but the batsman was not hurt. A third type was soon introduced.

• Cricket for women has been played since the 18th century.
  Although cricket is primarily played by men, women have been participating in cricket since at least the 18th century. English villages such as Surrey, Hampshire and Sussex also held their own women’s tournaments, with prizes for the winning teams including beer and select items such as lace gloves.
• The longest cricket match lasted for 14 days
  Cricket can be long at the best of times, but one game in particular really took the cake. In 1939, a match between England and South Africa lasted 14 days, after which the players slept for another 14 days.
  The length of matches varies by format, with T20 matches generally being much shorter than those of other formats.
• The Nelson Score is considered ominous
  As one of our fun cricket facts based entirely on superstition, this one is particularly interesting. The Nelson score is a team or player’s score of 111 points. This is considered unlucky as three 1’s are vaguely similar to a no-bell wicket.
• Sachin Tendulkar made his debut at the age of 16

  The first overflow occurs when a bowler bowls six consecutive balls without conceding a single point to the opposing team. Bapu Nadkarni managed to score a remarkably modest record on this front in 21 consecutive overs while playing for India in 1964.
• Australians are the luckiest cricketers
